Yay or Nay: Johann Joachim Winckelmann

The results are in and no one seemed amused by Pauline Bonaparte's daring exposée. She was met with a big Nay due to her mixing up of different century fashions and the age-old faux pas of: "no one wants to see that!" Perhaps we should look at some casual-wear, hmm? Let's check out some comfy lounge clothes, perfect for that cold weather that is upon us.

Anton Mengs paints art historian, Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1768) in a luxurious state of undress. Is he sacrificing fashion for comfort or combining the two elements successfully. Yay or Nay?

  1. Nay. I don't like the colours and besides, he looks dirty to me.

  2. I think I'd like to borrow that robe. It's so cold in my dorm room! YAY!

  3. I agree with Tulip. He looks like the flu personified. Besides, as much as I love a lux interlining like English bump in anything silky, this ensemble looks like it was lined with pillow innards. "Puffy coat, I am your father...."

  4. Nay. The robe isn't too bad, though it does look like he wrapped a feather duvet around himself, but the head thingee is just horrible.

  5. He looks, as others have said, ill rather than comfy. Plus that turbanesque thing clashes dreadfully - so 'nay'.

  6. I am always partial to a man in a dressing gown, but that hat/turban must go. Yay.

  8. Although I love a man in pink, I have to say Nay due to the puffy-factor.

  10. Nay. The whole turban thing never appealed to me, and he looks like he has caught a cold. It's sad that he had to be painted en negligèe, for he seems handsome enough.

  11. Yay! He looks like a pimp!

  12. Yay here. Looks elegant, warm and designed for two. The turban is slipping slightly, but is much better than a comb-over or a wig.

  13. Nay. The robe makes him look like a pimp and the turban is just bizzare.

  14. He looks rather silly, nay.

  15. Rather than looking comfortable he looks posed and ill at ease. He is swimming in his clothing, including that turban. The colors are nice, but it's a big Nay from me.

  16. If he got rid of the head wrap, it would be okay. So Nay for me.

  18. The painter has done well in the expression of the eyes and face, but nay on the gown and turban.

  19. He looks cold, so I would probably throw that thing on too. Yay!

  20. Oh, Nay. I'd love to borrow the gorgeous robe, but what is that on his head? I don't think he's dirty or ill, just unkempt. Perhaps, given his profession, he offered sparkling conversation and artistic insights to make up for that turban? He IS smiling.

Plus he is OUR FATHER! Bless him!

  22. Aha, so Mengs knew what Winckelmann looked like en deshabille, eh? Hmmmmm. Methinks he's overdressed, but maybe it was cold.
