Yay or Nay? Mrs Wilbraham Bootle

Brr, do you feel that chill?  Either that is the newly arrived autumn or the lukewarm reception to Mrs. Musters' hat.  Although the votes we split right down the middle, the porcupine, fuzzy, family pet hat made it out with a Yay.  But it is time to bid adieu to hats and welcome in the cooler temperatures with some appropriate clothing.

George Romney paints Mrs. Bootle (1781) in her fur-lined cloak and simple green gown.  Yay or Nay?

  4. YAY! I love the color of the fur, and I'm a sucker for muffs.

  5. Lovely! Absolutely lovely. Until I looked at the hat. O_o Simply doesn't do a thing for the outfit. She looks like she's wearing a washerwoman's hat!

    So a qualified Yay.

  6. A nay. I think the ensemble doesn't work together. The hat doesn't do anything, the dress while nice doesn't suit the coat, a richer color would have looked better. And then I just don't like the coat.

  7. Hmm...it kind of looks like a duvet, so not so stylish but I bet it was just as cozy. So a half hearted Yay from me.

  10. The colours look very classy and elegant. The cloak looks a bit too vomuminous for my taste, but I bet it keeps her warm and cozy, which is important, too. A Yay from me!

  11. Oh yes, I mean Yay! I had a white muff when I was a child and have loved them ever since, but have never had one as an adult. Can we conspire to bring them back into fashion? Katherine Louise

  12. Yay. It's a beautiful painting and striking ensemble. I like her calm, elegant expression, as well.

  13. A yay from me, though not an overly enthusiastic one due to the vague colour of her dress. It pales too much with the white coat, which is gorgeous.

  16. Oh yes! Yay! If you are going to do big, warm, winter cloak, that is the way to go. I just want to cuddle up next to Mrs Bootle, and luxuriate in fur and the silk.

  19. Yay! (Though I agree with nightsmusic about the hat, and would like to see a bit more of the lovely green gown!)

  20. Yay! Luxurious and beautiful. I like the cap too--it's way better than the oversized floppy mob cap. If you're going to have a scrap of fabric on your head, at least keep it dainty.
