Therefore in 1702 the government established measures facilitating the implantation of gin consumption among the people. Hogarth really believed that gin was endangering the social order, although recent studies had showed that the increase of violence was related to the rise of poverty. In fact, the crime rate and infant mortality continued to grow after the gin act of 1751. If you are interested in the issue, you should read Peter Clark article :The 'Mother Gin' Controversy in the Early Eighteenth Century (1987). There is also another very interesting article in French, from Suzy Halimi: La Bataille du gin en Angleterre dans la première moitié du XVIIIe siècle (1988).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7775910475089264257.post-30303274945762861912011-02-22T13:40:45.390-05:002011-02-22T13:40:45.390-05:00I had no idea gin was such an issue then! very int...I had no idea gin was such an issue then! very interestingPlumhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08800123763876314799noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7775910475089264257.post-39621977491817338972011-02-22T11:54:54.111-05:002011-02-22T11:54:54.111-05:00I didn't know that's what a salty dog was!...I didn't know that's what a salty dog was!
