Dog Reads

I just keep finding all these great posts today! For the few of you who actually follow this blog, my obsession with the 18th century dog, especially in art, is no secret. Well, Vic, over at Jane Austen's World has written a post about the 19th century dog. This dog wasn't as sacred as the Enlightened 18th century dog, but treasured just the same.

On the topic of dogs, I would also like to recommend this great book, based on the exhibition by the same name, Best in Show. This catalog has a series of essay and a great collection of paintings of dogs in western art history. Another great read would be A Picasso Bestiary, which was co-written by one of my favorite professors, Deborah Povey, who knows so much about animals in art history, you could listen to her for days on end and never get bored.

  4. I just found your blog, which is lovely. Have you read _For the Love of Animals_ by Kathryn Shevelow? In general, it's about the 18th-c. animal rights movement in England, but there are some nice dog moments.

  5. Thank you! I did see that book somewhere with the adorable photo cover but I didn't expect it to be related to the 18th c for that very reason. Yet another book for my never-ending wishlist! Thanks Emily

  6. There's also a book called (I think) 'In the Corner of the Picture.' It's a tiny little book put out (I think again) by the National Portrait Gallery. It's not all dogs, just animals in portraits. Short and sweet.

  7. Yes!! I know exactly which one you are talking about! I bought it for a friend a few years back, and when I went back to get a copy for myself I couldn't find it and had to settle for one on Tudor portraits. Oh well.
