A Father's Legacy to His Daughters, Conduct and Behaviour

If there was a foil to Fordyce's Sermons it would certainly be A Father's Legacy to His Daughters by Dr John Gregory.  This conduct book was written out of love for two daughters from a man who knew his death was near.  It has some refreshing and "Aww"-worthy bits of advice that young ladies of the 1770s.

"If, while a gentleman is speaking to you, one of superior rank addresses you, do not let your eager attention and visible preference betray the flutter of your heart...Consider that you expose yourseves to the ridicule of the company, and affront one gentleman, only to swell the triumph of another, who perhaps thinks he does you honour in speaking to you."

Mrs James Fordyce, Really?

While sitting in a presentation by my most excellent colleague yesterday, I nearly fell over when he informed everyone that this beauty strewing flowers about the grave of Fingle was none other than the wife of our favorite opinionated fuddy-duddy, Dr James Fordyce.

What is even more gossip-worthy is the fact that Dr Fordyce wouldn't have approved of his wife's act of honoring the Celtic hero so it is quite interesting that she is depicted as such.  Looks like it's another woman ignoring your well-meant advice, Dr Fordyce!

"Yes those more accomplished ensnarers are sufficiently aware that there is no allurement equal to that of maiden virtue and therefore having lost the reality they study to retain the appearance.  In this instance no doubt as in numberless others the operations of Nature may be counteracted by violence and her most speaking features silenced by dissimulation.   But ah! how much more easy pleasant noble and happy to be virtuous than only to seem so!"

"We [men] wish for a place in your hearts: why you not wish for one in our's?  But how much are you deceived, my fair friends, if you dream of taking that fort by storm!  When you show a solicitude to please by every decent, gentle, unaffected attraction we are soothed we are subdued we yield ourselves your willing captives.  But if at any time by a forward appearance you betray a confidence in your charms, and by throwing them out upon us all at once you seem resolved as it were to force our admiration..."

Fordyce's Sermons to Young Women, Sermon I, Page 12

Parents now a days almost universally down the lowest tradesman or mechanic who to ape his superiors strains himself beyond his circumstances send their daughters to Boarding schools.  And what do they mostly learn there? I say mostly... they learn chiefly to dress to dance to speak bad French to prattle much nonsense to practise I know not how pert conceited airs, and in consequence of all to conclude themselves accomplished Women?

" 'What should we then do when together [instead of gambling]?' Do! Why, converse or hold your tongues, as good sense and unaffected nature prompts to either. Do! Why, work, read, sing, dance, laugh, and look grave by turns, as occasion serves; any thing in the world that is innocent, rather than eternal play."

"A masculine woman must be naturally an un-amiable creature. I confess myself shocked, whenever I see the sexes confounded."

"The world will judge of piety by its professors. The proceeding is often unfair; because they are often unlike that which they profess. But there is no possibility of preventing it."
