Yay or Nay? Wilhelmine Encke Gräfin Lichtenau

It's difficult to say no to good looking man.  It's especially difficult to say nay to one when they have the good taste of Jacques Cathelineau who earned a starry-eyed Yay from our panel.  All this manliness needs to be countered with a bit of girlishness for this week's selection.

Anna Dorthea Therbusch paints Wilhelmine Encke Gräfin Lichtenau (1776) in a pink gown prone to wardrobe malfunctions. Yay or Nay?

  1. Think pink! Think pink, it's the latest style you knooooow! Think pink, if you want that quel-que choooose! Now I wouldn't presume to tell a woman what a woman ought to think; but tell her if she's got to think, think pink!

  2. Absolute, utter Nay. Wrong girl for the dress, the expression is painful, and the wardrobe malfunction looks like she's trying too hard to be like the pretty girls in the other pictures.

  3. She looks swamped in that colour that isn't even pink - it's a horrible red that makes her look sick and flushed. With the feathery hat of 'meh-I'll-shove-it-on-top-ness' and that intrusive dog.

    No from me.

  4. Nay from me. Just a bit too pink (and a bit low cut!) for me!

  5. She looks cheap and tasteless in it. Or to use 18th century Britain's favourite word: Vulgar. Nay.

  6. Well, isn't she a hot mess! And the dog with the "Lady, pull it together !" look on his face is priceless. It is truly a ghastly pink and the slattern-ly Royal Mistress pose is a bit much. I almost find it offensive---was she made to sit like that because of her role as the King's mistress or did she feel she needed to present in a provocative manner at all times because her position was so precarious?

OK, I'm reading way too much into this.....

The pink is horrific, the hat is all wrong and her eyebrows could use some work. Overall, a Nay

  7. I like pinks... but not this one. Nay. Heather, can you tell me why the artist would paint in a wardrobe malfunction?

  8. I would usually say Yay for something like this, but her face isn't very pretty and her revealing dress is rather unfortunate... that isn't even considering the colour. ;)
    Nay!

  9. The unfortunate dress wasn't that uncommon then as far as the malfunction goes, but the dress is just way, way too much dress for her. Her squatty head gets lost between the yards of material and the plumage.

    Nay.

  10. I'm going to buck the trend and say that I like the dress...just not on her. Properly fitted so that no malfunction may occur, and with perhaps a different hat, I think I would enjoy the simplicity of the one all-over fabric devoid of too much trim. I like the general cut of it. I guess I give the dress a yay, but her a nay for being ill-fitted.

  11. Are those buttons or nipples, she asked in a quavering voice? I have to plead in favor of buttons, if nipples much too small. Also the artist seems to have painted the left arm about a foot too long, reaches clear to her ankles!
    Pink. OMG! Nay, sadly.

Perhaps part of your Phd thesis could be the examination of poor anatomy depictions amongst the artisans and break it down by education and sex, eh?

  12. Too much of the same color. My computer screen reads tangerine, not pink. She looks like an orange. Nay

  13. Have to say Nay, but love the dog's pose!

  14. Yes to the cute eyed Whippet. NO to the rest.

  15. Why are her nipples out of the dress?!?! oh my gawd, no.

  16. There is a nipple and buttons there - a sort of visual pun I guess. Maybe this colr was the newest greatest thing but I say Nay.

  17. Okay, pink is my favourite colour. Normally, I'm all for anything in bright pink, but this? I do like the dress, but overall? No. Just no. She does kind of have a pained expression, I don't like the hat she's wearing, and can someone PLEASE tell me what the deal is with that dead, whatever it is, in the bottom left-hand corner? Nay, nay NAY!

  18. I respectfully disagree with the naysayers, I think the coral pink goes well with her complexion, though please someone explain why the mis-function immortalized? I think it's an Italian Greyhound, matches my dog and especially that expression of looking for a kiss...

  19. icky icky icky ew. even the dog is all like, "girlll, as your sassy small dog, i've gotta tell you, you look awful." i sort of love how she has leather gloves to protect her hands from the great outdoor but her boobs are just kinda hanging out there. XD

  20. She's fat and ugly and her dress looks awful. Nay.
