Eleven artful attitudes...
Emma Hamilton didn't have a dime to her name when she was tricked and literally sold to Sir William Hamilton by her boyfriend. As luck would have it, the ill-matched couple worked out (for a while anyway) and Sir William was able to help refine Emma and some of her interests. Together they would entertain traveling guests in their Naples villa and Emma would perform her "attitudes," posing in different classical stances. It was partially these sexy poses that seduced the hero du jour, Admiral Nelson.
Stating the obvious in 3...2...1...
ReplyDeleteGee, she was a looker when she was young!
Yes, she was gorgeous! But boy did she get fat...
ReplyDeleteBig girls need love too...
ReplyDeleteAmen to that Jessica!
ReplyDeleteOh I hope that didn't get taken the wrong way! Sorry if it did! She was a big girl when Nelson fell in love with her :)
ReplyDeleteO Lordy! None taken at all. I always have to pipe up for those of us who won't blow away in a draft. ;)
ReplyDeleteI love the line in Blackadder "As Nelson said in the Battle of the Nile... 'England knows Lady Hamilton is a virgin. Poke my eye out and cut off my arm if I'm wrong." Gotta love Blackadder :-)
ReplyDeleteHaha, I love Blackadder.
ReplyDelete"No one ever made money out of good looks and charm!"
"You obviously haven't met Lady Hamilton."
By the way, I have to add that I just love this site. I don't usually comment because I read it on Google Reader (and I'm a relatively new subscriber), but WONDERFUL job!
ReplyDeleteHaha! Thanks for the Lady Hamilton jabs-gets me every time (nerd!).
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Emily!! Glad to see you and even happier you like the site!
Nelson, the hero du jour?? Hero du siecle, maybe. Hero d' epoque, possibly.
ReplyDeleteEmma *was* awfully pretty. Every single sitter of George Romney has a smug look that makes me want to punch them in the face - except for Emma.
Really you don't think she has that smug look on her face?
ReplyDeleteI think she was quite the ham for Romney!
I'm learning so much here, I always THOUGHT I wasn't interested in this historical period but your tarts and their stories have proved me wrong (which is nothing new really).
ReplyDeleteOh that's so nice to hear, Ren! Leave it to a bunch of wanton ladies to make a time period more interesting ;)
