You & I must have some serious conversation and make some firm resolutions upon the subject of gaming. I cannot do it without wounding my conscience, but your doing it wounds it doubly, as it reproaches me with what I can never make myself easy about, the bad example I have set you, and which you have have but too faithfully imitated...
Lady Spencer
17 November 1779
Lady Spencer's life was a bland, shallow pool beside her daughter's deep and tempestuous sea of scandal and emotion. She liked to exercise her jaw and pen frequently, but she hadn't a bit of Georgeanna's spirit and so she could not hope to understand.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't have summed it up better myself!
ReplyDeleteWhat a selfish woman. Don't gamble because it makes me feel bad that I am a crap parent. Never mind the problems it might cause in your own life, I'm the important one here
ReplyDeleteLol I wouldn't say she's selfish as much as she is resorting to guilt-trips in a last attempt to curtail her daughter's gambling. I liked this quote because it reminds me of my own mother who always threatens to use her "Italian-mother guilt-trip." Maybe there was a little Italian mother in Lady Spencer.
ReplyDeletei've been gone but now am back...it's been great to catch up! :)
ReplyDeletePerfect timing, welcome back! You must participate in the gossip party!
