That's actually some white on his chin from being an old black dog! Just like the one sleeping at my feet right now! He has his legs on her shoulder affectionately which I've never seen in a painting. It was common however, to portray a pet or animal, in the 18th century to show the sitter's Enlightened connection with nature.
That IS a beautiful painting! She has a sort of Julia Ormond quality, though more delicately pretty. @Leslie: I love that you thought that was a dog attack! Ha, ha! @Heather: What do you know about a Reynolds painting of Mrs. Carnac? I have an old litho of this and I cannot find much info at all about her on line. Know of it?
Hi, thought Id mention that Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery are holding a special exhibition for Sir Joshua Reynolds this autumn. So if you are in the area, pop by!

Sir Joshua Reynolds: The Acquisition of Genius
21 November 2009 to 20 February 2010
"An international artist, a forgotten local hero.
"Learn about the life of Sir Joshua Reynolds and rediscover his significance to Plymouth and the South West."
@Paul: There's a link to the fabulous Wallace Collection below. Mrs Carnac resides there. I've always liked it, with all the shadowing, and am quite jealous you have a print. I hope you find the info helpful!
Agreed.
ReplyDeleteSo sweet.
ReplyDeleteI love the colours in this. It's a beautiful painting but why is there a fierce looking dog barring its teeth in the bottom left-hand corner?!

ReplyDeleteAwww, what kind of dog is s/he, Heather?
ReplyDeleteHe's a mutt, black lab and possibly Shepard mix.
