Talks on Daniel Gardner's The Three Witches from Macbeth

In a bit of shameless self-promoting news I will be giving papers in both the US and UK on Daniel Gardner's amazing portrait of Georgiana, Lady Melbourne, and Anne Damer; The Three Witches from Macbeth

I'll be in Middleton, CT, USA on October 13 at the NEASECS conference chatting away and then on December 3-4 I will be at Cambridge University for the very exciting conference, Charming Intentions: Occultism, Magic and the History of Art.  If anyone is in the neighborhood I would love to see you there!

  1. Oh, boo. I will be attending ECASECS instead of NEASECS. I so wish that I could hear your paper!

  3. Arrrgggghhh... *the sound of pain from missing out on more amazing scholarship* Is your colleague focusing on paintings or texts? If you don't mind me asking, which specifically? I think stockings are a fascinating topic... I think you could do a lot with them in relation to Pamela, for example. She is always talking about wool "stockens" versus the "fine French ones" her Master's mother gave her, and the first indication that Mr. B is viewing her sexually is when he gives her stockings. AND you have some great images of her bare legs in paintings of Pamela! (Which, my prof told me, was much more scandalous at the time than a bare bosom...)

No, ECASECS is in Baltimore this year. I'm presenting on the Duchess of Cleveland and her bigamy trial against Robert Fielding. My one consolation on missing out on your paper and stockings is that Laura Engel, author of "Fashioning Celebrity," will be at ECASECS and I may even get to have lunch with her!

I've made the Daniel Gardner painting my desktop background. I didn't even know these amazing portrait existed. Thanks for alerting me to its existence!

  4. Your blog is lovely! Do you by any chance know where this work hung after Ann Damer commissioned it? Your talk on the work was a few years ago, but I wish I could have attended it.

    Thank you,
    Lauren
