All Hallows Eve Dress

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays, what other opportunities do we have for a yearly masquerade? Last year, Lauren and I went out and about as our two favorite ladies and as we walked down a cobblestone street we ran into three Colonial American ladies. No lie! I thought we should have a rumble like in West Side Story; the colonial girls just kept walking.

I am curious if anyone has any Halloween plans that may include some 18th century costume theme. Or maybe you had an 18th century costume in years past? Or maybe you think Halloween is stupid and, unless you are eight, a waste of time. Well, if you think that, I personally do not care, but if you can share, I would love to hear of or see some of your costumes! Please leave a comment, especially if they have links to pictures so we can all ooo and ahh your fine taste in masquerade-garb!

  1. Personally I really really dislike Halloween, but not for the dressing-up aspect. I love dressing up in costume, but the array of "decorative" decapitated bodies, small children masquerading as witches and whores and other horrifying scenes that typify Halloween disgust me.

But dressing up is fun! I just wish that costuming wasn't associated with a holiday with so many other undertones.

  2. I agree. I love Halloween for A) the candy, and B) having an excuse to dress up in historical garb! I considered a Marie Antoinette costume for this year (not a slutty knock-off, but an accurate replication), but settled instead on a Renaissance merchant woman. I will post a pic when I take the time to lace up.

It's about the only time of year, other than the Renaissance Fest, when I can dress up and not feel awkward in public. Lol.

  3. My mother used to always say that she knew I liked it just because it gave me a chance to be an alter-ego. And of course, you can't go wrong with candy and caramel apples, etc.

I envy talented people like yourself who can sew!

  4. Last year I had an 18th century theme, I went as The Queen of the Night a la The Magic Flute. It was immensely fun to make (I even put constellations on the skirt), although I wasn't fully satisfied with the faux stomacher on the corset. Anyways, weaving through the massive crowds that gather for Halloween (and I mean MASSIVE, my college is the place to be on Halloween) in panniers was really cool, because that's what it must have felt like to be at one of those huge balls in the 18th century. Well, if everyone at those huge balls in the 18th century were dressed in packaged Halloween hooker costumes that is.

    A few (horrid) pictures:

  5. You are my HERO! I love it; your costume is beyond fabulous and awesome job getting your hair just right! I am a HUGE fan of the Queen of the Night so I applaud your good taste, thank you so much for sharing. It does sound like you did get the masquerade experience; don't you love when Halloween actually lets you feel the part of your costume? Props on the index card fan too, I wouldn't have even noticed!

  9. This year I am going as "sexy" Marie Antoinette. I made the costume myself even down to re-curling the wig. Pics on my blog!
