Bess did die in Italy, and strangely enough, Eliza Courntey was at her side on her deathbed. When Lady S wrote this it was around the time Bess was Charlotte's "governess." I think you can just hear the tone of Lady S's voice when you read it.
Lady S should have taken a lesson from Jane Gordon and had Lady E kidnapped!
