The drawings in the background are one of the reasons I love this piece so much. So estate houses would have drawings printed into wallpaper and I wonder if that is the case in this image. Although, it probably isn't.
Oh my word, what an outstanding portrait! How have I never seen it before? I'm surprised it hasn't turn up in any of the Marie Antoinette bios.
Amusing side note--I googled Marie Christine after seeing this post to look for more of her paintings, and I happened to find engagement and wedding announcements for the *current* Archduchess Marie Christine of Austria! Apparently her new husband is Count Rodolphe of Limburg Stirum. Hurrah for royal gossip!
How adorable! What a clever self portrait - I wonder if the drawings on the wall behind her really existed, and if she did them herself!
ReplyDeleteI love the little spinning wheel!

Archduchess Marie-Christine of Austria is engaged
Archduchess Marie-Christine of Austria's Wedding
This younger portrait makes a good contrast with the other one on Wiki. Ah innocence vs. experience!
