Yay or Nay? Prince Heinrich XIV

Well, it appears that you were as won-over with Mrs. Newbery and her buttons as I was. If only would could see the whole gown; what a tease! This week, we will focus on outerwear. Will our latest selection make you feel all warm and fuzzy or chill you to the bone?

Anton Graff paints the perfectly posed Prince Heinrich (1789) as he takes off his tricorn hat so as not to distract us from his hunter green coat. Yay or Nay?

  1. The coat seems to cover only the area of his nipples. He really needs to button up. Yay on the coat; nay on how it's buttoned.

  2. Nay. His coat looks kind of rumpled and slept in to me, which kind of throws off the whole look. Nothing a good ironing couldn't fix, though.

  3. I kind of love it - rumpled and all. Very rustic! :)

  4. It's a yay for the coat, but would it have killed him to button it properly?

  5. Yay! I love 18th century fashion for men.

  6. Yay on the oufit - rural and very à la mode. Nay on the coiffure - his hair makes him seem old!

  7. I like the coat, wrinkled, disheveled and all, but the wearer is only - meh. Still, this is yay or nay and not hunk alert, so I should not think this way. One detail I like is that his hair actually looks likes it's been under a hat for most of the day. Eye cream.

  8. Yay! The cut of the coat is very interesting....

  9. Yay for the outfit but I don't think he carries it off properly. But I love 18th century fashion!

  10. I'm another YAY for the coat but not for the wearer - he seems a little fey to carry it off properly.

I really like this kind of rumpled, aristocratic outerwear (very Withnail and I), but I want it worn by suitably dashing (and also slightly rumpled) men!

  11. Yay on the outfit, the color combinations are simple and harmonious. He has that carefully careless look going. How old was the sitter himself at the time of the painting?

  12. What is in his other hand? A walking stick? I wouldn't mind taking long walks around his expansive estate. And I have a penchant for older men ;-)

  13. Yay, I like that he has restrained himself in the matter of weskit, and the coat is buttoned well, just showing the white for contrast. The painting, however is a bit awkward, so that the hair looks solid as a rock, and clearly there was a problem with the hand.

  14. I have a coat that is nearly identical to this one, so I must vote yay.

You may see me in my coat here.

  15. I'm a sucker for the color green, but his outfit would stand out more if the background wasn't so overwealmingly green as well.

    Yay.

  16. I really like the colour of the coat, and this is ye another fierce portrait (his pose, this time, as opposed to his eyebrows). Yay!

  17. I'm neither yay nor nay. I like the colors and the cut of the coat, but I don't like the pose and the rumpledness. He does have an amiable air, however.

  18. Yay! The green coat calls the attention to the upper part of the body, almost making you not noticing the non-existence of a bulge...

  19. Ummmm....yayish. I'm not that enthusiastic, but it's not that bad. It just seems a bit sloppy and the proportions are off.

  20. It's a yay from me as I love green...and menswear.
