A Fan Fit for a Duchess

For any big fans of The Duchess, the savvy Lauren located an article of interest.  This is a fan from the movie, with a print of Knightly in the form of Gainsborough's famous image of Georgiana.  Of course she has to have her mouth gaping open (in a sexy manner?) which is really ludicrous; but I digress.  What is pretty cool about this fan is that it shows the attention of detail that went into the movie.  I never even noticed the people in the crowd holding them!  When Georgiana canvassed in the 1784 Westminster Election fans were made with her and Charles James Fox's images on them.  Although I have yet to see if any of them remain today, this prop has got to be pretty close to what they would have looked like.  Check it out Although I have yet to see if any of them remain today, this prop has got to be pretty close to what they would have looked like.  Check it out here.

  1. It is really ugly. I wish they used Georgiana's real portrait instead of Keira's. I still can't stand the way the movie made Bess sound; she wasn't a true friend to Georgiana! I hope you find the real ones; they'd be much prettier!

Is the fan for sale the real one from the movie?

  2. I don't know what they thought they were doing but it really doesn't work! As much as I love Ms Knightley that version of the portrait is awful. Yes, it shows some amazing attention to detail from the director and the props and costumes departments, but I'll never be able to reconcile myself to the liberties they took with history - as The Duchess says, they completely twisted Bess' personality, and that's only the first issue!

(But I'll not rant here - as a film, disassociated from Georgie if that's possible, it was good.)

  3. Yup, the real fan from the movie, otherwise why would pay that much. Yikes!

  4. That movie should be used in film schools as an example of how NOT to make an adaptation. Regarding the fan, I'd think the image would have seemed more like an etching, less like a printed oil painting.

  5. Mmm, Keira Knightley pouting? How unusual :D. The rest of the fan is lovely though

  7. You're right. The movie was way off. Canis wasn't As bad as they made him seem and Bess was so much worse than she was potrayed. Earl Grey was really a freak, not the lover he was said to be. Another inaccurate character.

They should have used Georgiana's real portrait instead of Keira's. The movie was about Georgiana!

It really does have a lot of detail. The detail is pretty, the picture is ugly.

Quick question. If the real ones had Fox on them why don't these as well?

I could go on about how bad the movie was. I won't though for your sake!!

  8. @the Duchess: I know how you feel about the movie. I could almost see myself spending too much time at a blog spot called: "Let's Talk About How Sh--ty the Duchess Movie Was". Except that, for all the pleasure of venting, it would be plainly odd to dedicate so much time and effort to something that even the makers of weren't interested in doing, except between playing video games.

  9. @The Duchess, Because if you recall *begins the rolling of eyes while writing* in the movie she is canvassing for Grey, or at least they are only showing her introducing him to make a speech. As I recall there was no mention of Fox at all. Since the actual election was for Fox there was the fan propaganda with his face...thank God the movie didn't dare put Grey on a fan!

  11. They get an "A" for effort in even making a fan for the movie, but an "F" for properly adapting to Georgiana's life and times. Like Paul said, a whole Blogspot could be devoted to how bad the movie was.

It seems like Keira is what Helen Bohnam-Carter was 20 years ago--stuck in "corset roles," but unlike Bohnam-Carter, she doesn't have the proper beauty/figure, or the range of skills. (Though, I find it funny that I though they casted her as Anne Boleyn, but it was really Natalie Portman--and Keira's first role was playing Queen Amidala's double and their mothers couldn't tell them apart in makeup).
