Yay or Nay? Maria Amalia Christina

Last week we put the ghost of Louise Élisabeth up to bat and her afterlife taste in fashion earned her a Yay.  I hope all of my posthumous portrayals have me in Dior.  This week we're hitting the Polish runways, but will we like what we see?

Louis de Silvestre paints Maria Amalia Christina (1737) in her jupeczka, a fur lined gown, and cocked hat.  Yay or Nay?

  1. This rated a 9.5/10 in the 'rate the dress' on my blog a few months ago, so it had better get a pass here!

Anyway, I think it is a great outfit and perfect for keeping warm in a Polish winter! The only niggling argument I have with the outfit is that is looks just a little bit old. Maria Amalia is only a teenager in this painting.

  2. Ermine lined Polish red velvet? Oh yes, please. Beautiful. My wish would be to see more of the underdress. That pattern is is luxurious. But what is in her hand, a portrait?

  3. Absolute yay! I love the floral skirt peeking out just a little bit. Makes a lovely contrast to the otherwise bold red and fur.

  4. This one is a definite "yay"! I love the idea of a fur lined dress, perfect for Poland.

  6. Is she a teenager?? She looks like if she's in her fifties.

The dress is elegant, and practical in the winter. Yay for the dress, Nay for her, by wearing it.

  7. I can't see the hat well enough to judge, but her dress gets a definate Yay from me, as does that little wink of underdress. I love how she pulled off such posh, luxurious materials without losing the elegance of the outfit.

  8. Nay. It looks like every other dress. It reminds me of something that Queen Caroline would like.
    Nay.

  10. An absolute yay! She's Saxonian like me and I love her petticoat beneath and the cute hat. So YAY even if she's not been my kinswoman...

  11. Striking colour and a cheeky hat. It's a yay from me :)

  12. Yay. I like the color and I imagine that it felt sumptuous to wear. I also like the yellow print of the fabric of her dress underneath. Looks like fun winter wear. She also seems pert and proud to be shown wearing it.

  13. Nay. This is a disaster. I cant quite put my finger on how a dress can be so obnoxiously 'present', but have no character. Seriously. This dress has no personality. Its red, velvety, lined in fur, and its humongous---and yet, its boring. Oppressively boring.

  14. Yay - although, if she wasn't a teenager, I'd mark her down for trying a little too hard to make a statement. However, that's slightly hypocritical of me - but I guess I'm only 18 so still fit into that category, too.
