Yay or Nay? Jean-Baptiste Belley

Oh dear, Mrs Loring was run out on a rail for her Nay of a gown.  But as Heidilea pointed out, perhaps it is Copley who should get the Nay since the dress was his creation, not a seamstress' of the homely Mrs Loring!  This week we will steer clear of any more fake dresses and homely Copley women and check out some French menswear.

Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy-Trioson paints Jean-Baptiste Belley (1797) in his Convention member uniform to which he added some chic accessories.  Yay or Nay?

  1. Yay for not painting a black man as a monkey or with a fools grin on his face.

And he looks quite fabulous!!! Vive le Revolution!

  2. I don't know why, but I didn't like the pose a lot, any way I give him a Yay.

  3. i give him a Yay, even to his pose ...but his facial expression is ridiculously meek, what's going on there?

  4. Was I the only one to notice that it seems that he is holding is penis like if it was a cigar?

A big nay... Somehow it looks more like a masquerade...

  5. Yay. I like his ties and the sashes in his cummerbund. Especially with the grey folded in, the coloring is perfect.

  6. Hm... the coat is prime, but I'm not sure about the cummerbund. Is it really tied over the outside of the coat? It looks ok in the painting but something tells me in real life it would look like he swathed himself in rags made of the French flag. Maybe that's the look he was going for? And his hand draped oh so casually over the very large bulge in his breeches, oh my. I suppose it's a qualified yeay.

  7. I'm not fond of that pose either---just a bit too suave. But I do like the cravat and sash effect. I'll give him a Yay.

  8. He certainly looks French. The outfit is a yay, he looks polished and confindent. Perhaps too confident considering the facial expression and pose.

  9. A yay for the clothing, a big fat nay for the atrocious expression and disgusted stance of his pose.

    So, a split for me.

  10. His pose is ridiculous and seems very awkward, but he looks very smart - nice clothes! So, it's a yay!

  11. Yay! Except for the, ahem, hand placement, I like it.

(And, as an aside after reviewing the links provided to the Copley paintings in the other post, I'm surprised that anyone ever let him get his hands on them. Those are some ghastly portraits!)

  13. Sunny, I'm sorry to say I agree with you about Copley--I want to like his women, but cannot. His men, on the other hand, are excellent. And thank you Heather for introducing me to 18th century artists. I've been focused on the 19th C and Impressionists, but have fallen in love with Gainsborough, Romney, etc. So beautiful! Katherine Louise
