Hunk Alert: Joseph Banks

SWM, Botanist, Naturalist, Explorer, and President of the Royal Society. Looking for a woman with a keen interest in gardening or other such Enlightening activities.
Likes: plants, sea voyages, the Histories and Sciences, and long walks in the park.

Some may describe me as a macaroni but I consider myself a man of science with a zest for adventure. I have just come back from seeing the wonders of the uncharted world with Captain Cook. This voyage has kept me very busy with the fascinating task of identifying and categorizing hundreds of flora that have never been seen in the western world. Despite my love for my job my long years on sea have brought me to realization that I miss the gentle companionship of a lady.

A woman who can appreciate the natural world is the lady for me. I don't need one with the same fervor for plants as I, but an appreciation is necessary. Otherwise, I would love to meet a lady who can discuss any good books, perferably on a long walk; be it on my estate or on the crowded streets of London.

  1. I don't think we'd get along very well long-term.. considering I'm kind of an air-head, but a fling would be oh so neccessary.

  2. Oh yes, flings could not be out of the question with these hunks!

  3. I say yay! And a man of learning is so attractive. I wouldn't describe him as a Macaroni myself, but this is lounging attire, so one never knows.

Haha! Yes, I'm sure the concept of fling is not foreign to the average 18c male. Good thinking!

  4. Ahhh, just looked at the National Portrait Gallery site and have found other images of him. It looks like he was knighted (or he fell in to a title by family). Check him out at npg.org.uk. There's even a couple of prints, one of which has definite Macaroni leanings!

  5. @Polonaise: I had insomnia last night so I read up on him. His father was a baronet but he did gain his own title when he became the president [?] at the Royal Academy. He actually accomplished quite a lot in his life - look him up at Wikipedia. It only makes him more alluring, though there are paintings of him old and fat, too, so beware.

  6. @Paul: Hehe. Yes, I saw the portraits of him as an older man but decided to glide over them. Thanks for the info and the Wiki tip. I was uncertain which way he became entitled. I'll look him up. Hope you get some sleep tonight :)

  7. Wasn't he also knighted? Long walks around the estate, discussing books and history and some appreciation of plants (thorny blossomy kind is my preference) I'm there!

  8. Yes, very cute.
    I have a question though.
In the 18th century, French money was francs, right?
How many francs were in a pound?
How many livres were in a pound?
How many florins were in a pound?
How many crowns were in a pound?
I'm really trying to convert all of these money types into 18th century English money, but it's very hard:/.

  9. Hi Anonymous,
I do not know enough about currency (especially French!) to give you a solid answer. This might be a good research post for me to look into for the future actually! If you find anything let me know; even a good book about it!

  12. Oooh, he has a definite dangerous glint in his eye! And that dash of a fur collar... Well, I suppose England must have been cold after the "charms" of Tahiti...

For those interested, I recommend a very good book: The Age of Wonder by Richard Holmes which tells you the story (among others)of this dashing scientist. Excellent read! And Georgiana features very quickly in it, too, she wrote a song in honour of Mr Mungo Park!

  13. Tina, It's that dangerous glint that attracts me too! :D

  14. Ooo Tina, it would appear you are already well-acquainted with our hunk!

  15. Mm... sure am. Don't I wish that would make him mine to lose and yours to gain, ladies!

  16. Very appealing, but I'm afraid I wouldn't do for him as it seems Banks preferred his ladies on the extremely brunette side. I just can't compare to the dusky maidens of the South Seas!

  17. he looks like one of the Fiennes, the younger one - the really really cute one. thank for the tip on the book - will be looking for it!

  18. Patrick O'Brian [Aubrey/Maturin] wrote an excellent biography of Sir Joseph:

O'Brian, Patrick. Joseph Banks: A Life. London: David R. Godine, 1993.
