Powder Me

Do you spend your mornings being tortured with the decisions of what to wear? Should it be the polonaise or anglais, the red waistcoat or the green? There is simply just too much to think about. And what about that hair? You have the style down but what about the powder? The eighteenth century had people powdering every inch of themselves creating an endless demand for those in the powder business.

You could powder your hair just about any color you wished ranging from the pristine white to the macaroni-approved, unnatural colors, such as blue. In the early part of the century, white was the established color of choice but by the end grey seemed to take over in popularity. Of course, you could always just go without...but then again with all that pomade in your hair and lack of regular shampooing, maybe powder was the best way to go.

Just for fun, I thought I'd whip up an online quiz (a short one, mind you) to help determine the right powder color for you. But as for brand or scents, that is up to you; personally you will usually find me with Lush's Candy Fluff in my hair (no lie) because my hairdresser to this day always recommends it to prevent over-washing. See, they knew their hair then! Take the quiz here and don't forget to tell us your result!

  1. My result is white powder. I would agree, I would not want anything too crazy or distracting from my outfit!

  2. I surprised myself when I got Natural, but then again I would probably have a different color for each day of the week.

  3. It was suggested that I use grey. Since I'm only 29, and have light brown/dirty blonde hair, I may pass on that. But thanks for the tip on the hair powder you use! I'll have to check that out.

  4. Apparently I should go powderless; but I'm with you, Heather, it all depends on my mood and the day.

  5. I'm au naturel too. Surprising, for I would go with a slightly pink hue that ended with bluish tips.

Powder, shmouder, who needs it. It just takes away from your lovely, natural locks.

  6. Hmmm...it's telling me the quiz does not exist.

I would have to say I'd be an au naturel gal though. I'm not much for add hair colors on me. On others, they can be quite stunning. Like when my DD2 dyed the underside of her hair bright, bright blue.

  7. Hmmm, I'm a natural. I would have chosen gray as my general everyday powder with an option on Insipid Pink.

  8. I'm surprised no one got a colorful powder yet!

  9. Woohoo! I should use colorful powder! Hmmm, I'm not sure if I actually would, but the thought of it is fun. :) Maybe on a special occasion.

  10. Huzzah! Colorful powders for me. I would love to powder my hair blue or pink to match my Converse sneakers. ;)

  19. I got natural too. I am not totally surprised since I dislike dyeing my hair. On the other hand, I love the look of white powdered hair. Oh dear, decisions decisions!

  23. Yes, it is from Perfume which comes highly recommended from me http://georgianaduchessofdevonshire.blogspot.com/2008/08/movie-review-perfume.html (too lazy to link it, sorry!) You have to at least give it a try.

With all this variety I am having fun with a mental picture of what it would look like if we were all walking around the pleasure gardens!

  24. I must confess that when I have an important social event I wear make-up. But only foundation (and some other discreet products). Unfortunately powder does not work on men's complexion.

  25. Grey, which is very strange given my age and the fact that I have a serious aversion to applying any product to my hair...=p

  26. I got grey, and I could see the charm in that. At 25, I already have a few stray grey hairs.

Or natural could be nice. Just a light dusting of powder.

  27. I got plain white, however, i don't think I'll be using it! I'm only 18!
