Sorry, Lis, close but no cigar! Although the votes were split down the center,
Elisabeth of Brunswick was give a Nay. Her offense? The pink "bowtie." These foreign queens just don't have any taste, do they? Active yay or nayer, rileyp suggested we try someone who might appeal to our more English sensibilities.
Nathaniel Dance paints the Queen of England (1769) in glitzy gold and white accented by many, many pearls. Be sure to click on the picture to see it in all its glory. Yay or Nay?

Oh, how terribly heavy that costume must have been. I love the look of it, but let her sit down if you please. Nothing can be done about the poor dear's face, can it? *sigh* I must say that I liked the other one better.
ReplyDeleteI say "Yay". If I was not able to click on the image to enlarge it, I would have gone with Nay due to the fact that her head is so small compared to everything else. After seeing the enlarged version I really like this one. The carpet choice could have been a little less clashing though.
ReplyDeletei say yay, i enjoy the dress.
ReplyDeleteMy inner Tory is saying Yay but I have to agree with everyone that poor Char's face leaves alot to be desired. ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm extremely fond of Queen Charlotte, and this dress just affirms my fondness. Like Charlotte, it is elegant and unusual rather than typically 'pretty'.
ReplyDeleteThe pearls and trimmings on the dress would make it be a little too much if it wasn't clearly a state portrait (note the crown in the background). As it is, the fun fabric on the skirt and simple pose and hair add a sense of approachability and sympathy to what could easily be too formal a portrait.
I say a huge 'yay!'
Yay!
ReplyDeleteA Yay! Those pearls must have been very very heavy. The pose Charlotte takes is very simple, but stylish. The dress says it all: 'I am the Queen!'
ReplyDeleteYay from me. But I think the brown thick line on that dress, wear out my eyes.
ReplyDeletea most definate Yay!
ReplyDeletethat's precisely the kind of outfit a Royal Beauty should be seen in, even if she's only staying at home watching the telly!
I must say 'yay' as well. The regal look of the dress leaves no doubt she's a queen.
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, I have to say nay. It's too busy for me, something about the skirt fabric, I think.

ReplyDeleteYay! A silk purse indeed. A little too much gold thread for me, but after all, it IS an official portrait.
ReplyDeleteNay--the dress is too busy and too encrusted and I don't like the layering of the pearls. I like the expression on her face though.
ReplyDeleteYay! The gown is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteYAY!!! I LOVE IT~
ReplyDeleteYAYAYAYAYAYAY!
ReplyDeleteI loveeee queen charlotteee!
She's my fav.
Well i love her pearls but her hairstyle looks a bit plain making her face look rather washed out maybe a bit of rogue and some feathers, flowers or more pears in her hair would have made her a bit more appeling. But as for her dress and jewllery i will say yay
ReplyDeleteYay for the dress, nay for the politics, Char dear. Ah well. Can't have everything, can we, m'lady? Though I must say, although she wasn't classically pretty, she isn't that bad!
ReplyDeleteHeather - loving the enlarge-ability =)Thank you!
I say Yay, also-oh, to be a Queen and look so regal!
ReplyDeleteYay... but only because she is a queen. It would be too much on anybody else.
ReplyDeleteNay to the dress--WAY too busy with the gold and everything else. But I love the ermine and blue silk draped over the chair! Wear that, girl!
ReplyDeleteI take back what I said about her face- once I enlarged it i realized that she isnt at all unattractive. God save the queen!
ReplyDeleteWell she isn't the prettiest...but I love the gown and so I say Yay!
ReplyDeleteWonderful fabric! Yay!
ReplyDeleteI love it! She looks beautiful-a big yay!
ReplyDeleteThere is something to be said for white and gold.
ReplyDeleteI give this one a yay.
I'm going to say 'NAY' because I think the pattern on the skirt is way too busy.
