Yay or Nay? Louise Augusta, Duchess of Augustenborg

Last week Carlota Joaquina had our panel in a split decision. I can't remember the last time the votes were so close!  However a Nay was presented to the 15 year old for making poor choices in fashion.  This week's contestant was recommended by reader, Rebecca; thanks for the next victim suggestion!  Maybe a princess of Denmark will fare better?

Jens Juel paints Louise Augusta (circa 1780-9) in Turkish dress,  Yay or Nay?

  1. Okay, while the shoes are horrid, the rest of the outfit is wonderful! The gold and blue go suprisingly well together!
    YAY!

  2. I like the whole thing. It must have felt a bit naughty to be in Turkish dress. I like the blue and gold combo, the veil and the entire atmosphere of the painting. yay!

  3. What on earth has the artist done to her legs? Her thighs are ludicously long and her shins stumpy, and she appears to be an amputee.
The dodgy proportions are too distracting for me and I'm not sure the dress is helping so I'd have to say Nay, unless she really is an amputee.

  4. Her legs, the shortness of the right and her almost missing left, are a little distracting, but I still love the dress! Love the gold and blue, and the fur trim is just right.
I love that belt, which looks a bit like ovaries, but whatever.
    YAY!

  6. Oh, I like this one. The bodice and belt and the fur trim are great. Not too sure about the gauzy head thing though. Otherwise she looks very Warrior-queen, needing only a pike with some guy's head on it to complete the picture. So, I give it a yay!

the artist made some really poor decisions with the posing however, thats not her fault

  9. I agree about the mess the artist made of her legs, but a yay to her dress. I especially like the blue silk or satin light over coat. I bet she had fun swooping around the palace in it!

  11. I like it, too -- of all things, she actually looks COMFORTABLE, which you don't often see in these portraits. That ermine-lined robe looks like her idea of a comfy sweatshirt, and I can kind of see her point.

    Yay.

  12. Sorry, but nay. because of all the wonderful choices she had to pass up to wear this thing. It is ok, but she wore this for a portrait that would be looked at for centuries when she could have worn any one of many lovely things.

  13. The gold dress is gorgeous, and I love the belt this time. Louise Augusta definitely knew how to accessorize! And the blue cloak is beautiful too. I'm not sure how I feel about the veil, but the rest of it is so awesome, I'm giving it a definite yay.

  16. Yay to the dress, hang the artist. Her arms cannot be that long, and being as long waisted as she is, looks extremely odd with the classic hand/finger spasm pose.

  17. Yay from me! Compared to the other portraits that jens Juel made of Louise Augusta, this portrait is balanced and the lightning is good.
That girl much have had a thing for veils(or headattire in general). I have not yet seen one painting of her where she is not wearing veils, turbans etc.
