Yay or Nay? Mrs Juel

Sorry Wilhelmine Encke Gräfin Lichtenau, the Nay was loud and clear for your pink wardrobe malfunction.  As for those who asked about why her nipple was showing, nipple exposure was not as risque as now, and it wasn't uncommon for ladies' nipples to be exposed.  These were usually covered by fichus. Perhaps some less loud and more delicate, this week?

Jens Juel paints his wife (1791) gazing with admiration at his work while wearing a gauze gown and yellow petticoat.  Yay or Nay?

  1. Pretty and understated. I like the gauze and the stripes. Yay.

  2. I really liked this painting, and the dress is nice, but what is with the footstool? WHY ALWAYS THE FOOTSTOOL?

Oh dear, I've been drinking champagne again and have capslocksia.

  3. I say yay. As Lylassandra points out understated. I would add charming as well.

@heidenkind I think the footstool has to do with the feminine diminutive. We are so dainty we need a little footstool, oui? And cheers; I am also sipping (swilling?) la champagne.

  4. Understated, casual elegance. Also, that yellow petticoat just pops against the predominantly brown background.

    Yay!

  5. Yay, yay and yay again! She looks relaxed, confident and happy. A wonderfully casual pose in a lovely dress.

    Capslocksia. LOL!

  6. I agree Yay. Pretty and charming. I suspect the painter chose the colors and fabrics to highlight his skill. Katherine Louise

  7. Much agreement with all above comments....AND...the painter seems capable of well proportioned anatomy. Well done, I like the gown, hair is a bit frizzy but it must have been a high humidity day for hair...or not.

  8. I think everyone has my same sentiments; pretty, streamlined, charming, relaxed. Yay!

  9. Nothing reconciles you to a bad hair day like a great outfit. Yay!

  10. Lovely dress. I do hope she is careful to keep it away from his palette. Oil paint stains are so hard to get out!

  11. Very sweet pose, casual and affectionate. And her dress is lovely. Too bad about the grey, frizzy hair though. Much has been said about about the mortality rate living in an era pre-antibiotics, but what about the horror of an existence devoid of decent hair products as well??? I shudder to think.

  12. Beautiful dress! It's a really nice shade of yellow, and the blue sash around her waist compliments it really well :)

    Yay!

  13. I love her dress. I hate her hair--it looks like a worn-out loufa. But the dress is good enough by itself to earn a Yay.

  17. I'm a yay.
    I agree with the others.

  18. Exposed nipples also symbolized the lady's mode of money-making.

This is a nice dress, and I am always in favor of pretty stripes. Neckline is a little busy, but let my first visit here be a Yay.

Pass that Veuve Cliquot over here?
